About Bowling Green State University

Bowling Green State University, commonly known as BGSU, is a public university in Bowling Green, which is the county seat of Wood County, located in the US state of Ohio. Bowling Green has a population estimated at a number of nearly 30 000 inhabitants (2000), and it is best known for the fact that it is home of Bowling Green State University.

BGSU first started as Bowling Green State Normal School, as an educational institution which was dedicated to train and educate teachers, preparing them for the public educational system. Classes first began in 1914, with an enrollment of only 304 students primarily from Ohio, Michigan and New York.

Since its founding, BGSU grew, having today an enrollment of nearly 25 000 students, of which 3000 are graduate students, offering more than 200 undergraduate programs, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees, including the nation’s 1st PhD program in photochemical science, and several other educational programs in various fields of study.

The athletic teams from BGSU are known as the Bowling Green Falcons, who compete in the NCAA Division I, I-A for football, in various sports including women’s basketball and ice hockey. The teams have won 3 conference championships in a row, in women’s basketball, in 2005, 2006 and 2007, automatically advancing to the NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball Championship, in each of the reminded years.

The list of notable BGSU alumni contains names such as Frank Dungan - television producer and writer, Ashley Kuntz - award winning photographer, Charles Maniscalco - CEO of Gatorade, Alissa Czisny - figure skater and national champion, Kevin Coughlin - Ohio state senator, Jay Crawford - ESPN sportcaster, Shantanu Narayen - CEO of Adobe Systems, as well as many other great people, who have made themselves notable in various fields, after graduation.
